Alex's Waimea Gun

I recently had the honor of painting a board shaped by my friend Alex...a very special honor, as it is the first board Alex shaped. I painted an image of Waimea on the 11'1" foam gun, pre-glassing. (The pictures below are all of the foam before it was glassed.)

I used the stippling technique and it was really interesting to see how the paint responded to foam instead of canvas. A bit nerve wracking because there was much less room for trial and error, but I figured it out as I went and everything turned out as planned.

...I still need to get pictures of the board since it has been glassed...especially now that it's been ridden!

floating quietly in calm waters

seas and winds glassed off

a moment at one with the ocean

and completed since my husband and I made our move to the North Shore of O'ahu.
lulu is my first painting conceived

"lulu" means 'calm, peace' in Hawaiian. It's also a beautiful name.

At 30" x 40",
the piece is fairly large, although not my biggest canvas.

I started this in Mission Beach, finished it up in Hawaii. My first multi-canvas piece.
Also, I had been wanting to try out pointillism
(painting strictly with dots)...
It was fun, but I am looking
forward to brush strokes again!

Todos is composed of three 1 ft squares.

The piece is not for sale; although I am very reluctant to give this one up,

it has been spoken for already.

secretspot is my latest piece. Another big one,

I had a lot of fun with this painting... there is texture; a loose, fluid interpretation of perspective; and a hint of sun appearing in the corner. I tried out some new techniques and incorporated some of the old as well. this painting makes me smile.

...this painting was a joy to create - it came to me with ease. The wave inspiration comes from Jayapura - a perfect, clean, lonesone wave. As with the last few paintings, I tried some new techniques with the water - and I am very pleased with the results. I also chose a new size canvas,
which perfectly suited this composition.

moonlight

Again, I tried some new things - moonlight instead of daylight, and thick texture in the sky (see detail) . I think the piece turned out well, and some have told me it is a favorite of theirs.

I am pleased to say that moonlight has been sold!

I tried a lot of new things with this piece. A smaller canvas, the backside of a wave, and a partially submerged perspective. Texture and sheen play a huge role in the piece, which perhaps as a result, was quite difficult to photograph.

honey on the outside

Another original composition, 'honey' is a painting on traditional canvas, which was applied to a surfboard prior to being painted. The edges of the canvas are distressed, much like the board itself, which has seen a good long life, surfed by my wonderful husband, Marc Collins, in various waters of the world, including South America and Indonesia.
